NAGSAGAWA ng “siren salute” o sabayang pagpapatunog ng sirena ang sea assets ng Philippine Navy, Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources at maging merchant ships sa buong bansa bilang paggunita sa ika-9 na anibersaryo ng 2016 arbitral award sa South China Sea na pabor sa Pilipinas.

Sabay-sabay na pinatunog ng Philippine Navy, Philippine Coast Guard, at Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources ang mga tambuli ng kani-kanilang mga barko bilang pakikiisa sa anibersaryo ng 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling nitong nakalipas na Sabado.

Ayon kay Captain John Percie Alcos, Navy Public Affair Office chief, ang siren salute ay isang naval tradition na sumisimbolo sa pagkakaisa, tribute, at pagpapatuloy na nagpapaalala sa commitment ng mga coastal community para depensahan ang mga dagat ng bansa at panindigan ang maritime heritage.

“The symbolic act also echoes the Navy’s resolve to defend what is rightfully Filipino, as enshrined in the 2016 Arbitral Award and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS),” ayon sa Hukbong Dagat ng Pilipinas.

“Guided by the Arbitral Award, the Philippine Navy continues to strengthen its capabilities, sharpen its maritime posture, and deepen cooperation with like-minded nations that respect international law,” ayon pa sa Philippine Navy.

Kung matatandaan, nanalo ang Pilipinas noong 2016 sa landmark arbitration case na nagbasura sa claim ng China at pagtibayin ang exclusive economic zone sa South China Sea ng Pilipinas.

Bukod sa mga sea asset ng mga ahensya ng gobyerno, sinabayan din ng mga merchant ship sa iba’t ibang katubigan ng bansa ang pagpapatunog ng tambuli bilang tanda ng kanilang pagsuporta sa inilabas na ruling ng Arbitral Tribunal.

Samantala, sa pahayag na inilabas ng Presidential Office for Maritime Concerns,  ang sabay-sabay na pagpapatunog sa tambuli ng mga barko ay isang kolektibong pag-alala at pagpapakita ng pagkakabuklod ng bansa sa gitna ng iginigiit pa ring karapatan sa West Philippine Sea, siyam na taon mula nang ilabas ang arbitral ruling ng Permanent Court  na  pabor sa claim ng Pilipinas sa West Philippine Sea.

Ayon kay Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, “The Arbitral Award, which clearly affirmed our sovereign rights over our exclusive economic zone and continental shelf in the West Philippine Sea, is not merely a legal pronouncement. It is a resounding declaration that the only legitimate guide for the conduct of nations is the rule of law – never the imposition of might.”

“Let me say this: The West Philippine Sea is not just a line on a map. It is a lifeline. It feeds our people, secures our borders, and speaks of our dignity as a nation,” paalala naman ni AFP chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner.

Sa pagbati ng United States sa Pilipinas, inihayag ni US State Secretary Marco Rubio na “Since the 2016 ruling, China has ignored the decision, continuing to assert unlawful and expansive maritime claims and taking increasingly aggressive actions against its neighbors. Beijing’s expansive claims directly infringe on the sovereign rights and jurisdictions of Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia, and undermine peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
